Bloons TD Battles

Bloons TD Battles

Review

The epic battle between monkeys and balloons continues in this saga of Bloons TD Battles. Monkeys are usually the antagonists, throwing unhinged projectiles at humans with an evil grimace on their faces. In this installment, balloons are your main enemy and monkeys form the tower that keeps you from being instantly annihilated by the evil latex. Deviating from the traditional gameplay that you are used to with Bloons, the game encompasses human PvP, adding a layer of depth and strategy.

These are no regular monkeys. Some throw darts, while ninja monkeys launch deadly shurikens slicing through multiple balloons at once. Others wield glue guns, and there are even chopper-riding varieties. There are custom battlefields and 22 tower defenses, three different game modes, and other challenges. As the game progresses, you need to up your defenses as the blitz of balloons will only keep getting stronger.

Graphics and Sound 4/5

The main difference between Bloons TD Battles and the regular Bloons series is the fact that the playing screen is split, and you can see what your opponent is doing on the other half. The cartoon graphics, which are iconic of the franchise, have been maintained with little upgrade. The game has a lot of bubbly colors and fast-paced soundtracks, which is especially great if the momentum increases. Your available towers are shown on the periphery of the screen.

Story Plot 4/5

In Defense mode, you and your opponent must guard yourselves against an endless onslaught of balloons, and whoever stands last wins. In Assault mode, you need to defend yourself but can also send balloons toward your enemy. If you are victorious, you will earn medallions that you can use to purchase bloons or upgrade your towers. There is an element of strategy involved because you have to choose the right tower or weapon to unleash.

Controls 4/5

The press-and-shoot mechanism for mobile is efficient for the TD genre. You can unlock every upgrade by merely pressing the relevant on-screen prompt. Likewise, you can adjust the tower direction when you place it. Shooting is simply a matter of tapping the corresponding tower and doesn’t require memorization of complex controls. This, coupled with assistance from the on-screen prompts, makes the controls efficient and the game easy on any device.

Difficulty 4/5

Bloons TD Battles starts off easy but gets progressively harder as you move along. The game never feels too complicated or overwhelming. You do need to employ a good amount of strategy and anticipate which the best tower to deploy is. Speed ultimately matters, and you have to balance between making purchases and defending yourself.

Conclusion

Bloons TD Battles is a fun and addictive game with a lot of pace, action, and strategy involved. The game is simple enough for anyone, even a newbie, to get comfortable with. There are enough battlefields, towers and weekly challenges to keep the game fresh. Introduction of the assault mode is welcome and livens up the gameplay with a real opponent.
